SCI works with collaborators like the American Academy of Arts and Letters to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.  The Academy was looking to offset carbon emissions from their member and awardee’s airfare to their Annual Awards Ceremony and Solar Cookers International was the perfect answer.  SCI Volunteer of the Year (2014) Mary Frank recommended to the American Academy of Arts and Letters that they donate a percentage of their airfare costs to Solar Cookers International - and they did!

The American Academy of Arts and Letters spread the good work of Solar Cookers International even further by inviting SCI Science Director, Alan Bigelow, PhD, and SCI Volunteer of the Year Mary Frank to their Annual Awards Ceremony to meet with some of the nations’ leading artists, composers, and writers.  Every event program carried the following message:

The Academy will donate five percent of last year’s member and awardee airfare to Solar Cookers International to help offset its 2018 carbon footprint.  Solar cooking improves environmental health, facilitating access to pure water and nutritious food, and eliminating air pollution from fossil fuels.  Learn more at www.solarcookers.org.

Thanks to solar-cooking supporters all over the world, like you and the American Academy of Arts and Letters, there are more than 3.3 million solar cookers around the planet, directly improving the lives of more than 11.8 million people.  Through solar cooking, more than 4.7 million tonnes of CO2 emissions are prevented every single year, the equivalent of taking almost 1 million cars off the road.

When asked what she likes about solar cooking, Mary Frank responded: “It’s not just that I like it, it’s an urgent necessity.  Climate change is a pressing problem and people need to know about and have and use solar cookers.  Our planet is our only home.”

Thank you to the American Academy of Arts and Letters for their dedication to saving lives, improving the environment, and changing the world.

Thank you to supporters like you and Mary Frank, who share the good work about Solar Cookers International and encourage others to get involved.  Your voices and actions are building the movement to protect our planet with solar cooking.
