Empowering Change with Solar Cooking: Ruth Holton-Hodson on The Heart of Giving Podcast
Solar Cookers International Vice President Ruth Holton-Hodson recently joined The Heart of Giving podcast by BBB Wise Giving Alliance to highlight SCI’s transformative work in the clean cooking movement. During the conversation, Ruth emphasized that solar cooking not only empowers communities struggling with energy poverty but also protects women from harmful smoke inhalation linked to traditional cooking methods.
She further underscored the urgent need to combat deforestation, explaining, “One family of four uses one ton of wood a year to fuel their fire. So where's that wood coming from? It’s coming from the forests and the woods near the villages, which slowly get cut down, which creates tremendous deforestation.”
This reality is alarming, particularly considering that over 2 billion people around the world lack access to modern cooking fuels. Solar cooking is a simple and effective solution to the problem. As Ruth explains, "It's a really important solution because the energy of the sun, as we all know, is free. So people who are living in very poor circumstances, and spending much of their income on fuel like wood, charcoal, and kerosene can actually tap into energy of the sun."
Through solar cooking, you can help provide a sustainable path forward for communities worldwide, addressing both energy needs and environmental challenges simultaneously.
Be sure to give it a listen!
Note: Please note that the number of people lacking access to modern cooking fuels is an evolving statistic. According to the latest data, approximately 2.1 billion people still rely on polluting fuels like charcoal and firewood for cooking. Additionally, the price of a solar cooker varies depending on numerous factors such as the type of cooker, availability of local materials and transportation costs, the quantity produced, training, and monitoring and evaluation, among others.
