Solar Cookers International (SCI) highlighted the transformative potential of solar cooking at our press conference during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) on November 21, 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan. The session focused on “Solar Cooking at Kakuma: A Kenyan Case Study of the Climate, Gender, Health, and Economic Impacts of Cooking with the Sun.”

SCI Partnerships Manager Keith Wingeard was joined by Ms. Rosemary Atieno, Founder of Community Mobilization for Positive Empowerment (COMPE), Kenya, to discuss how solar cooking is making a difference in Kakuma.

Rosemary Atieno shared:

“Solar cooking has several advantages. We are going to reduce the cutting down of trees for firewood. We are going to reduce the number of respiratory diseases that comes along with using various types of firewood. We are going to encourage creation of income for our women. We are going to reduce gender-based violence… Our children will have warm food when they come home from school and women will have more time to attend to more developmental agenda in the community.”

The discussion emphasized the wide-ranging benefits of solar cooking, from mitigating deforestation and respiratory health risks to empowering women economically and socially. Solar cooking offers a practical solution to the challenges faced by vulnerable communities, aligning with global climate and equity goals.
